Sights of necessary trouble
De wetenschapper vergaart kennis door theorieën te ontwikkelen, hypotheses te testen en experimenten uit te voeren om uit chaos nieuwe wetmatigheden te ontwaren. Ook de kunstenaar is onderwerp van wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Het werk van Patrick De Nys voor dit project is recursief: hij onderzoekt zijn ervaring, de studie van zijn sensoriële ervaring verandert hem, en zijn verandering is zijn werk. Beton, macadam, bakstenen, kasseien, staal, glas en verf zijn amorf. De kunstenaar is fluxus. Hij ondergaat als onderzoeksonderwerp verandering en ervaart opeenvolgende fases: opwinding, weerstand, woede, ontkenning, vertwijfeling, creativiteit, onzekerheid en enthousiasme. De Nys laat zich door de ontstane chaos verleiden: aantrekkelijk, beminnelijk, zelfs geruststellend. Hij manipuleert, en wordt overvallen door afkeer, angst en woede. Hij ruikt, voelt, ziet, hoort en proeft de stad. Hij beweegt en wijkt af van de norm. Wie de stad wilt opmeten moet chaos delen. Meten is weten en De Nys weet dat hij veranderd is.
The scientist gains knowledge by developing theories, testing hypotheses and by experimenting without end. That way he or she tries to uncover new patterns or laws in time and space. The artist as well, can be the subject of scientific research. Patrick De Nys’ work for this project plays with that idea. De Nys investigates his experience and the study of his sensory experiences changes him. And that change is his work of art. Concrete, macadam, bricks, cobbles, steel, glass and paint are amorphous. The artist is fluxus. As an object of study the artist undergoes change and experiences: agitation, resistance, anger, denial, despair, creativity, insecurity and enthusiasm. De Nys is seduced by the ensuing chaos and succumbs to her soothing charm. He smells, feels, sees, watches and tastes the city. He moves and deliberately dodges the norm. Measuring is learning and De Nys knows he has changed.
